The release of the Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 is an exciting time for us, as it marks the 10th vintage from our unique site, tucked in the base of the Pisa Range in Central Otago.
It is hard to believe that we bought the bare block of land 18 years ago and began the process of mapping out the site and getting everything set up to establish and run a vineyard Biodynaically from scratch. Whilst this approach was somewhat of a novelty at the time, we wouldn’t change a thing and believe it is the right way for us to run a successful vineyard.
Over the last 18 years we have learned a great deal about the intricacies of the Vineyard and the way in which each block has its own unique personality and in turn the way in which Shane and the team adapt their viticultural management to suit the dynamics of each part of the site.
The same learning curve has been reflected in the winery, with Claire and the team getting to grips with the way in which each block is managed during the ferment, pressing, and the fine tuning of the oak selection, to give us a Pinot Noir that captures a true reflection of the vineyard.
We cannot talk about this amazing journey without recognising the exceptional insight and knowledge that Ted Lemon gave to Burn Cottage during his time with us. His attention to detail in the clonal selection, roots stocks and layout of the vineyard was at the time something that had not been seen in New Zealand. His words of wisdom still influence the vineyard and wine-making to this day.
“When I first visited the Burn Cottage site in 2002 (unplanted at the time) and after discussing the merits of the site and project with Marquis, I told him I would work with Burn Cottage but under one condition. The project had to be biodynamic. I simply couldn’t bring myself to work conventionally any more. While the prospect did seem daunting, given Central Otago’s challenging weather and soils, I felt that I had a sense of what tools we would need to bring to bear to make biodynamics a success in Central” Ted.
We were also incredibly fortunate to have the services of the late Peter Proctor, who’s in depth knowledge of Biodynamics was invaluable in setting the wheels in motion with the vineyard establishment.
Since then we have had a host of amazingly talented vineyard workers and young winery interns that have helped shape not only the story of Burn Cottage but we in turn have been part of their career development in an industry that thrives on collaboration and passion. A trait that is shared with everyone involved with Burn Cottage.
It also goes without saying that we would not be here without the tremendous support we have from people like you that have been seduced by Central Otago Pinot Noir. We have also been incredibly fortunate to have the support of restaurateurs, Sommeliers and Fine Wine merchants from across New Zealand and all corners of the globe.
At the end of 2019 we had stated the process of planning a 10 year release celebration at the vineyard to share wines, food and our insights and stories from the journey so far. However the Global event over the last while has meant the plans have been popped on the back burner until a more suitable time is available.
In the meantime, thank you for all your support, stay safe, and if possible enjoy spending some quality time with family and friends.
Kind regards
Marquis, Dianne and the Burn Cottage Crew.
