A Central Otago Pinot Noir Colab and a 28 Year Friendship....

Our unique Collaboration with Valli vineyard is borne out of a 28 year friendship, and a shared passion for Pinot Noir between our winemaker Claire Mulholland and Grant Taylor the Owner/Winemaker of Valli.

Following her time with Chard Farm, Claire joined Grant in 1994 to work at the then fledging Gibbston Valley winery in Central Otago and between them they can now claim close to 100 vintages, at some of the worlds most revered Pinot Noir wineries across the USA, NZ, Australia and France.

After visiting each other’s sites, the Colab sees us sending Grant and the team at Valli a ton or so of hand-picked Burn Cottage Vineyard Pinot Noir, and in return they send us the same amount of grapes from the Valli Gibbston Vineyard. We then craft  our Burn Cottage “Valli” Vineyard Pinot Noir and in turn they craft the Valli “Burn Cottage” Vineyard Pinot Noir. The result is that we get to bottle our pure expression of the unique Valli Vineyard, and see another expression of our vineyard through the eyes of one of the regions most respected pioneering winemakers.

In our view there is no finer vineyard in the Gibbston region than Grant’s. The professionalism, care and attention which goes into the management of this site is exemplary and this is reflected in the wine that we have crafted from this single vineyard.

In fact the newly released Valli Gibbston Pinot Noir 2019 ( the same vineyard that our Colab Pinot Noir  comes from) by Grant was recently awarded the trophy for "Best NZ Red Wine" at the International Wine Challenge in London, which further backs our belief that this vineyard has a unique character.

The overall 2019 season temperatures were moderate, which preserved wonderful balance and acidity towards the end of the season. The Valli Vineyard had a lot of small bunches and berries this year and we picked slightly early to preserve these.

The Burn Cottage Valli Vineyard Pinot Noir 2019 has stunning aromas of wild roses, thyme, bright red fruits and spice, with lovely subtlety and elegance to the palate. The low yielding twenty year old vines have also helped to deliver opulence, richness, complexity and texture with a long seamless finish.

This single vineyard Pinot Noir always sell out quickly on release and as there will be no 2020 release (due to Covid harvest restrictions), we strongly suggest that you don’t dally if you want to secure an allocation for your wine rack/cellar. Otherwise you could be waiting until 2023 to find out what all the excitement is about…..
