Burn Cottage Valli Vineyard 2018 - Friendship & Collaboration

Our winemaker Claire Mulholland and Grant Taylor of Valli Vineyards have a long history of working together in the Central Otago region that spans back over two decades. Grant is an iconic figure in Central, equally beloved for his wonderful wines and his quick wit. Over the course of several months in 2013 Claire and Grant decided that it would be great fun to swap a small parcel of Pinot Noir from each other’s estate vineyard and make the wines, with each of us vineyard designating the result.

This year we are releasing the Burn Cottage “Valli” vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 which marks the fifth year of our collaboration project with Grant and the Valli team.
The two sites are located 32 km apart and below is a snapshot of the two vineyards:

  Valli Vineyard   Burn Cottage Vineyard
Sub Region  Gibbston Lowburn
Elevation 343-351M 240-310M
Planted 1999-2000 2003-2008
Vine Density/Ha 4050 5000
Soils Schist-Loess and alluvium loams over gravel Alluvial Schist loams/ clay gravels

Vintage notes: 2018 was a very warm year with above average temperatures in December and January. It was welcome that conditions later in the summer were milder, and ripening slowed favourably. Even so it was unique season in that both vineyards were harvested in March – for Valli Gibbston this was at least two weeks ahead of usual timing.

The 2018 vintage has delivered us a Burn Cottage Valli Vineyard with a lifted perfume of violets, wild rose, thyme, bright red fruits and spice. It has a lovely subtlety and elegance to the palate which is supple, complex and long, finishing with seamless tannins. Approachable now but expect it to happily cellar for 7 to 10 years. It was also a small vintage and we have very limited availability - it will be a case of first in first served…

Burn Cottage "Valli" Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 - $70

We have also released a Colab case that contains three bottles each of the Burn Cottage "Valli" Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018 and the Valli "Burn Cottage" Vineyard Pinot Noir 2018.

Burn Cottage / Valli Colab Case -  Buy now $417

We hope you enjoy drinking them as much as we did making them !!

Kind regards

Marquis, Dianne and the entire Burn Cottage Crew.
